June and Joes News

Well time flys.  June and Joe have owned the business of Aspen Manor for 8/9 years.  This is the 4th motel we have owned.  It is time to move on.  The definite plans for us is too retire.  If anyone has an desire to own there own business we would be happy too talk to them.

It is a smaller world with more people traveling overseas.  Spending hours on an aircraft is difficult.  There is considerable extra stress traveling overseas.  If you want a relaxing stress free holiday, New zealand is hard to beat.  Traveling at different seasons in NZ can also be interesting.  A rental car and a motel is a good combination and possibly cheaper than a campervan.  Flexibility, no stress.  In most cases you do not have to book ahead for motels.

It has been two or three years since we have holidayed overseas.  This trip was to Vietnam as the comments we were getting from NZ guests at the motel was very good.  We have done other Asian trips in the past. We were limited by time and season because of the business.  As a result we went at the hottest time.  Average daily temp was 35 degrees up as high as 40.  The body does not cope well but we had a private tour guide with an air conditioned vehicle.  As a result we were not exposed for too long each day.

We were advised to get accommodation minimum 4 star. It was very good, and we felt very well catered for.  Wages are low and the service was to the point of being intrusive. Having good accommodation plus an air conditioned vehicle meant that we could cope very well.  The cost was not over the top.

One hotel in Hanoi (web below) was a bit of a shock.  55 Rooms, restaurants and a large reception area.  The complete hotel was 16 feet wide.  Very few windows.  It was all okay but it was a bit of a shock not having any windows.  Probably one of the best beds in the complete trip.

Food is always fun to experience but you do get “food” home sick.  As a result I found I was having French fries and a bottle of beer for lunch.  We bought 5 pairs of glasses for the cost of 1 pair NZ using our NZ prescriptions.  Overall I would say that prices were cheaper than NZ and the service exceptional.

However there were some bad spots and the prize must go to domestic airport terminals. Safety on the roads and footpaths is scary. I would not drive over there as there is too much to see and 90 million people to avoid. Being a motelier I was always observant to fire safety and in one hotel I had words with management.  17 people were killed a shoe factory fire while we were there.

If you can take the culture shock it is recommended.

Picture is of June crawling out of a underground tunnel in the Cu Chi area on the Mekong Delta.  A very interesting day which resulted in washing all our clothes.
